Keeping it safe
February 12, 2003
Anxious fans awaiting the arrival of Ja Rule and company tonight may have to be a little patient when entering the Convocation Center.
With the large crowd expected for tonight’s show, security will be at full force with one goal in mind.
“We just want everyone to enjoy the show,” said Mike Domenighini, senior security supervisor for the Convo Center. “We want to get everyone in and out safely.”
He said all patrons will be subjected to a visual search and a light pat-down upon entering the venue, Domenighini said.
Visual searches involve looking for bulges in pockets or other unusual signs of carrying illegal items. Domenighini said guards mainly look for alcohol being brought into the building.
University Police also will have officers present to augment the Convo Center staff, said Lt. Matt Kiederlen. Eight UP officers will be at tonight’s concert, working inside the venue, as well as helping in the parking lots and aiding the flow of traffic.
Kiederlen said there will be more officers at tonight’s event as compared to other events, like last weekend’s monster truck rally.
“Music concerts are more charged,” Kiederlen said. “Emotions run higher as compared to static events.”
Neither Kiederlen nor Domenighini were overly worried about things getting out of hand.
