Track and field keeps breaking records

Coach Shantel Twiggs’ freshman class for the NIU track and field team has gone above and beyond expectations during the indoor season and was able to come away with a second place, 109-point finish at the Central Michigan Quadrangular Saturday.

Freshman Chanel Brown continued to turn heads by breaking her school triple jump record for the fourth meet in a row with a leap of 36-feet, 11.5-inches for a fourth place finish.

First-year sprinter Erica Smith placed third and set a new school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.93 seconds.

“Erica executed all of the things that we talked about this week in practice when she stepped on the track,” Twiggs said.

Chelsea Crigler jumped onto the record breaking bandwagon, shattering her own mark in the weight throw with a toss of 46-feet and one-half inch, which was seven and one-half inches farther than her old record.

Veteran Alicja Czajka took first place in the mile-run in a time of 4:58.85 and then snatched a third-place spot by finishing the 800-meter run in 2:17.62, the fastest time posted by an NIU runner this season.
