Huskie pitcher arrested while ‘promoting band’
February 12, 2003
The NIU baseball team’s junior pitcher, Zach Minor, was arrested by DeKalb police just after 1 a.m. Sunday for entering and remaining in a tavern as a minor, according to DeKalb police reports.
Minor, 20, had a 6.44 ERA for the Huskies this past season, and returns as the second most often used pitcher with 64 1/3 innings pitched.
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound left hander, Minor said that he was only at the bar, Starbusters, to try and book a concert for his band, Clientel.
“I was just trying to promote my band,” Minor said. “We weren’t drinking, and I just got a ticket and have no court date.”
DeKalb police were unavailable for comment.
A Moline-native, Minor alerted first-year coach Ed Mathey of the incident before Mathey heard of the news.
“Zach’s the one that made me aware of the situation,” Mathey said. “In no way shape or form do we condone what he did, but I think Zach handled the situation in an appropriate manner.”
Minor is still expected to be with the team, and NIU Assistant Athletics Director Stacy Allie, who is in charge of overseeing baseball, said the matter is of the legal sort that is between Minor and Starbusters.
“The coach and I will discuss the steps that should be taken,” Alley said.
Minor and first-year NIU pitcher Jim Caine, a Kishwaukee transfer, form Clientel along with Minor’s neighbor Jake Miller. The band has been together for less than a year and will play at Stadium Club on Friday for the second week in a row.
