Campos honored
January 15, 2003
Not only did sophomore Kristina Campos prove her freshman year was no fluke in Sunday’s win over Winona State, she performed so well that she was named MAC Gymnast of the Week.
Campos earned the honor after posting an all-around score of 38.925 out of a maximum of 40. She reached this score by winning the floor and balance beam events with scores of 9.875 and 9.725, respectively.
“Since last year, I got a lot of experience, so I kind of expected myself to do well and get a high all-around score.”
In her short career at NIU, the confident Campos already has posted two of the 11 scores of 39 or better in Huskie gymnastics history. Her effort Sunday helped produce the best season-opening score ever.
“Kristina has had an incredible pre-season; upgrading all of her routines from last year,” coach Mark Sontag said. “She is a tremendous competitor, and I believe she’s as good or better than any gymnast in the MAC. She has proven the ability to get the job done on a week-by-week basis. Her consistency is a key to getting to the postseason and regional competition.”
