NAACP to hold 13th annual MLK march
January 23, 2003
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the NAACP chapter at NIU presents the 13th annual MLK March, “Empowering Minds Today, With a Message from Yesterday.”
The march will begin at 3:45 p.m. today in front of Stevenson North and will travel past the residence halls until it reaches King Memorial Commons.
After the march, all are invited to hear guest speaker the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. at 5 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium. Wright’s message will be about leadership, spirituality and everyday life.
“Everyone will benefit,” said Shavonne Tompkins, vice president of programming and activities for chapter. Wright is a pastor from Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and is well known as a speaker and a reverend.
Secretary Nicole Arnold said all organizations and individuals are welcome to come, and are allowed to bring anything to honor King.
“The MLK march is a very prominent event on campus, and it’s something for all races to attend because Martin Luther King did not just fight for rights for blacks, he fought for equality for all,” Arnold said.
“We hope that this event will unite students and keep Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive,” said NAACP President Meagan Shade.
