Afternoon snow buries area

Lady luck was on DeKalb’s side Tuesday when Mother Nature wasn’t.
The snowfall Tuesday afternoon brought an onslaught of phone calls to area emergency dispatchers, but as of 5 p.m. there were no reports of injuries.
Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department had no reports of his department’s units being called to accidents, while Chief Deputy Kevin Hickey of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department had most of his deputies out on calls.
“Telecommunications is busy, but patrol cars have been responding, so there’s been no backlogging of calls so far,” Hickey said.
Although there was an accident on Route 38 west of DeKalb early Tuesday afternoon, there were no injuries.
Hickey said that weather often causes accidents because drivers try to avoid an accident that already has occurred.
Since the Sheriff’s Department is the only dispatch center that has the technology to receive cellular calls, all emergency calls from cell phones are routed to its department. Because so many people have cell phones these days, the sheriff’s office may log seven to 10 calls reporting the same accident.
