Owen goes for school record

Scott Owen has a chance to make history this weekend when the NIU wrestling team (0-2) travels to the Elmhurst Duals Saturday to start a seven-meet road trip. The first match is set to start at 6 p.m.

The 157-pound Owen is ranked No. 2 in his weight class and has accumulated 20 pins and a 95-20 record as a Huskie, tying him for most career victories by an NIU wrestler.

Former Huskie grappler Mark Kuehl set the standard for NIU wrestlers when he won 95 matches from 1987 to 1991 as a heavyweight for the Huskies.

“It would be a pretty neat thing,” Owen said. “There have been a lot of great wrestlers here.”

Owen’s brother Aaron was one of three wrestlers to sign letters of intent with NIU on Wednesday. The other two recruits are Kalen Knull of Urbana, Ohio, and John Giuliano of DeKalb.

Knull went to the same high school as 141-pound freshman Josh Wooton, who leads NIU with an 8-1 record this season.

Scott Owen is 1-1 on the season after a loss to No. 1 ranked Luke Becker of Minnesota and a victory against Chris Borchardt of Wisconsin. He pinned Borchardt in 1:39.

“When I came here I set expectations for myself,” Scott said. “It will be my testament to working hard.”

However, Scott will not be the only Huskie to keep an eye on this weekend as eighth-ranked, 184-pound Ben Heizer has been making noise of his own lately.

Heizer lost to No. 6 Ralph DeNisco of Wisconsin on Nov. 10 at the Michigan State University Open by a 3-1 decision in the championship match. Coach Dave Grant knew Heizer didn’t wrestle the best he could against DeNisco.

“Ben had a real close match with the wrestler from Wisconsin,” Grant said. “He had some momentum going for him, he just didn’t finish some of his take downs, but he’ll get a chance at him in three weeks.”

Heizer proved he could prevail and did so with an 8-1 decision over DeNisco. The 184-pounder now holds a 5-1 record on the season.

Senior James Oliva has been solid for the Huskies as well, compiling a 6-2 record and winning both of his matches in NIU’s losses to No. 3 ranked Minnesota and Wisconsin, who moved up to No. 15 this week.

Owen will have his first crack at the record when NIU takes on a revamped Elmhurst Bluejays wrestling squad that began the season by naming former University of Illinois standout Steve Marianetti as head coach.

Loras College will also be taking the mat and is coming off a 30-7 defeat of Upper Iowa University.

Heizer will be wrestling Loras senior Paul Cleary, who took first place in the Auggie-Brute Adidas Open with a 4-0 record, defeating his opponents by an average of nine points per match.

The Huskies have dropped out of the Top 25 and their next home meet is Jan. 24 when they host conference foe Ohio. They host Central Michigan the next Friday.
