Crash and burn
November 1, 2002
One of the greatest fears of anyone who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle is getting into an accident.
With traffic congestion both in DeKalb and NIU, traffic accidents are inevitable.
However, crashes occur with a higher frequency in particular areas.
According to the DeKalb Police Department, there are intersections in DeKalb where accidents occur more often than others. According to the statistics, 21 accidents have occurred at the intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Lincoln Highway and 14 occurred at Annie Glidden Road and Hillcrest Drive since Jan. 1, 2002.
“Those are probably two of the busiest intersections in town,” explained Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department.
Kayes said in intersections where traffic is controlled by lights should not have as many accidents as intersections without.
Injuries associated with these accidents vary significantly.
Despite the large number of accidents at Annie Glidden Road and Lincoln Highway, only one resulted in an injury.
Also, at the corner of Lincoln Highway and Peace Road, there have been five accidents that have caused injuries.
Kayes said a likely reason for the increased number of accidents resulting in injury at Lincoln Highway and Peace Road is because the speed limit is 10 to 15 mph faster than other intersections in town.
“It also looks more wide open and can be deceptive,” Kayes reasoned.
Since July, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported two deaths because of motor vehicle accidents. One occurred on Waterman Road north of Rueff Road and the other occurred on Preserve Road east of Leland Road.
