Ill. Open Meetings Act violated
November 25, 2002
The Student Association Senate meeting was adjourned early Sunday night because of an infraction in the meeting’s process.
Sen. R.J. Gravel pointed out that the meeting was in violation of the Illinois Open Meetings Act.
The act requires the senate’s agenda to be posted in a public forum no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting.
The penalty for not posting the agenda 48 hours prior to the meeting requires the senate to refrain from voting.
“It’s ridiculous and it’s hindering process,” said SA Director of Public Affairs Brooke Robinson.
SA President Kevin Miller attended the meeting, but left minutes later because he was not feeling well, said SA Chief of Staff, Kevin O’Kelly. Miller later expressed discontent in a late press release issued by the SA.
“Students at this school were screwed,” Miller said in the press release. “The behavior of the senate on Sunday night was in blatant disregard for students’ interests.”
This was the semester’s last scheduled SA Senate meeting. Miller called a special session of the body to make up for Sunday’s ruckus. He is expected to announce the time, date and place today.
After the senate was asked to refrain from voting, the body continued with discussion as though it was in a normal meeting.
In committee reports, SA Senate Speaker Frank Woodin stated the progress of the Internal Affairs committee.
“We passed the book exchange back to the senate, but there isn’t anything we can do about it tonight,” he said.
Woodin referred to the bill proposing a Web site where NIU students could exchange books with each other.
After little discussion and reports, the senate voted to adjourn the meeting.
Among other items not discussed in the agenda because of early adjournment were senate appointments.
The senate appointments are held to fill the empty seats with senators-at-large.
Issues that will be discussed when the senate resumes are lowering university parking tickets, extending DeKalb’s bar hours and confirming committee appointments that include the recently passed Big Time Entertainment committee.
