Team with fewest errors proves victorious
November 4, 2002
Errors. Errors. Errors.
That was the tale of the two matches this weekend at Victor E. Court for the NIU volleyball team.
In the match it won against Toledo on Friday, NIU had four less errors than the Rockets.
“We kept the ball in play and forced them to make the errors,” coach Ray Gooden said of the Toledo match.
But it was a different story against Ohio University on Saturday as the Huskies had 47 errors to the Bobcats’ 27.
NIU had more errors in every category in the Ohio match.
“We had 15 or 16 errors after the first game,” Gooden said. “We gave them 19 or 20 of their 30 points in the first game. That’s 20 points; that’s what it comes down to.”
The Huskies had nine more attacking errors than Ohio and hit .121 points lower as NIU had a .093 hitting percentage. Jen VonderHaar and Tera Lobdell combined for 14 attacking errors.
Serving wasn’t exactly working in the Huskies’ favor either.
NIU had six serving errors to Ohio’s one. Amanda Newlin had three service errors while Melissa Benson, Megan Sprangers and Lobdell each had one apiece.
Even though the Huskies were able to have more team blocks than the Bobcats, edging them nine to eight, NIU had five more blocking errors.
VonderHaar had one block solo and four blocking assists, but she also had four blocking errors.
“We just make errors,” Gooden said. “There’s nothing changed. Teams just aren’t doing much, they just serve the ball on the court and they are waiting for us to make a mistake. I think that it is a lack of confidence. I just don’t think that we are confident right now because we aren’t winning on a consistent basis.”
