Singing about the sticky stuff

By Peter Boskey

Being on campus, a lot of freestyling can be heard in the strangest places – in front of DuSable Hall, Grant Towers’ elevators and even public bathrooms. Well, here’s a challenge for all you rappers/artists.

Henkel Consumer Adhesives Inc., makers of the famous Duck brand Duct Tape, are having a contest to find a song that literally “sticks.” It is the first annual Duck brand duct tape “Rock About the Roll Contest.” Solo artists, duos and bands are all encouraged to send in an original song about Duct Tape. Entrants have the chance to win a variety of prizes including the first place prize of $2,500 cash.

“Spectacular,” says Andrew Lanthrum, a junior business major and songwriter/musician. “We’ll put together a band for that.”

Lanthrum’s roommate, Jon Wolff, a sophomore undecided major and musician, agreed and said he will write a song called “Duct Tape Rocks Because It’s Sticky.”

Contest participants are expected to send in a song about duct tape with original music and lyrics, along with a photograph. The song must be submitted on a CD as a .WAV file or as an MP3 file. The winners will be chosen based on a number of factors including creativity, musical skill, originality of the lyrics and references to duct tape.

The Duck brand Duct Tape “Rock About the Roll Contest” will award the first place winner $2,500 cash, second place $1,000 cash and third place $500 cash. Ten lucky honorable mention winners will receive a year’s supply of duct tape valued at $180. You could fix anything with that amount of tape.

“Forget the first and second prize,” says William Vigliotti, a junior communication major and lyricist, “we’re talking a year supply of Duct tape!”

The winners will ultimately be decided by a panel of judges selected by Henkel Consumer Adhesives Inc. All entries must be received no later than Dec. 2, 2002. The winners will be notified the week of Dec. 20 and posted on the Web site the following week. The original songs will be available for listening during the contest at www.ducktapeclub.com. Official rules can be found at the site.
