Vehicle crashes plague DeKalb

Four accidents occurred Thursday within the city of DeKalb and surrounding areas in which injuries and ambulances were involved.

The first accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Hillcrest Drive.

According to DeKalb police reports, the first vehicle, a Chevy pick-up driven by Jamie Wares, 20, of Belvidere, was traveling eastbound on Hillcrest Drive and attempted to turn left into the alley near 817 W. Hillcrest Drive.

In doing so, Wares pulled in front of a second vehicle, a Plymouth van driven by Tina McIntoush, 30, of 807 Ridge Drive No. 1017.

“I didn’t see the van,” Wares said.

The passenger side headlight of Wares pick-up was damaged.

She, as well as McIntoush, did not sustain any injuries. However, McIntoush had three passengers in her van, two of whom were injured. Johnella McIntoush, 50, and Tracey McIntoush, 29, were taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Both were treated and released.

Wares was charged with failure to yield.

Three individuals stopped to assist those involved in the accident.

Malik Isa, 22, of 417 Russell Road, and Corie Jones, 26, of 819 Russell Road, were driving by at the time of the accident and stopped. Brandon Smith, an employee of the Northern Star, also stopped to assist.

sa said that he saw smoke coming from the van and thought it was on fire.

Both men helped the injured women from the vehicle. Jones said that the women were complaining about knee and neck injuries and one of them started have a seizure.

The second wreck occurred at 1:40 p.m. on Route 23 at Kesslinger Road, according to DeKalb County Sheriff’s police report.

Robert D. Kendall, 22, of Oswego, was driving an Aurora Tri-State Fire Prevention Truck and attempted to turn onto Kesslinger Road.

Kendall failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle, a Oldsmobile Circa driven by Ronald E. Bastian, 67, of Hinckley.

Kendall’s truck had rolled over and needed to be tipped right side up in order to be towed.

Firefighters removed the fire extinguishers the truck was carrying to prevent any puncturing and the risk further complications.

According to Sheriff’s reports, Kendall and Bastian, as well as Bastian’s passenger, Dolores Bastian, 70, of Hinckley, were injured in the accident.

All three were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital via DeKalb EMS. All were treated and released.

Kendall was charged with failure to yield at an intersection.

The third accident occurred at 3:45 p.m. on Peace Road past Pleasant Street and involved five vehicles.

According to DeKalb police reports, the first vehicle, a Lincoln Towncar driven by Larry Wing, 57, of Rochelle, stopped to avoid a braking vehicle.

The second vehicle, a Mazda 626 driven by Bryan Balli, 24, of Sycamore, was able to stop and avoid hitting the first vehicle.

The third car in line, a Cadillac four-door driven by Ariel Ries, 18, of Kingston, stopped to avoid hitting the second vehicle.

However, the fourth vehicle was not as lucky as the previous three.

An Oldsmobile Delta driven by Jonathan Brown, 29, of Sycamore, slammed into the rear of the third vehicle.

This caused a chain reaction where the third vehicle hit vehicle two, which hit vehicle one.

On top of that, a fifth vehicle, a Honda CRV driven by Timothy Lawlor, 33, of Sycamore, smashed into the rear of the fourth vehicle.

According to reports, Wing, as well as his passenger, Jeanette Sisler, 76, of Sycamore, were taken to Kishwaukee.

Wing’s other passenger, Doloqres Wing, 78, of Rochelle, refused treatment. Balli’s passenger, Lois Adrins, 76, of Sycamore, also was taken to Kishwaukee.

The three individuals were treated and released from the hospital.

Both Brown and Lawlor were charged with following too closely.

The fourth accident occurred at 8:19 p.m. at the corner of North First Street and Ridge Drive.

A Buick Regal, driven by Sarah Klein, 19, of 810 N. 10th St., was traveling northbound on First Street and proceeded to slow down to turn onto Ridge Drive.

According to DeKalb police reports, Klein stated that she did not see the approaching motorcycle.

The Harley Davidson, driven by Preston Malone, 41, 725 N. First St., along with Shari Malone, 38, of 725 N. First St., was traveling southbound on First Street when he struck Klein.

Klein started to turn when the accident occurred.

Preston stated to DeKalb police that he observed Klein turn in front of him. He also told them he locked up the brakes but was unable to turn.

Preston and Shari were taking to Kishwaukee via DeKalb EMS. Shari was still in the emergency room receiving medical treatment as of Thursday night.

Klein was charged with failure to yield.
