Scaring up canned goods
October 30, 2002
Forget the candy. The Latter Day Saint Student Association wants your cans.
This Halloween, the LDSSA will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the corner of Fox Avenue and Sycamore Road to go door-to-door collecting canned goods. The goods will restock the shelves at the Methodist food pantry.
“They were ecstatic to hear we’d like to do a food drive for them,” said Sara Souther, LDSSA president and junior sociology major.
The idea for a trick-or-treating project came to mind when the association was hard at work searching for a service event that could help the community and bring other student organizations together for a common cause.
Souther is excited about the event. She said she tries to find service projects for the team that are consistent with the standards of their church.
“We try to provide experiences that give our members opportunities to enhance their experiences at NIU,” Souther said.
Although the Mormon religion doesn’t necessarily go hand in hand with Halloween, they chose the day for a good reason.
“Most people expect their doorbell to ring a hundred times anyway on Halloween,” Souther said. “I see it as the perfect time to involve the community with something that ought to concern us all … hunger.”
During the collection period, the association will hand out cards informing donators of where their contribution is going.
“Hey, and if we’re lucky, maybe we’ll get some candy too,” Souther added.
