Huskie Bus alternative serves DeKalb
October 23, 2002
t’s getting too cold to walk, and you need to get to Wal-Mart so you can buy a 16-ounce jug of fake blood and some chocolate.
Why not take the bus?
The city of DeKalb has two bus lines that can take NIU students around DeKalb, by Wal-Mart, Kishwaukee Community Hospital and DuSable Hall.
Of course there is the Huskie Bus, but there is another option for students who miss the No. 7 Huskie Bus.
The DeKalb Green Line arrives in front of DuSable between 30 and 35 minutes past the hour.
The price of the Green Line is one feature appreciated by DeKalb residents Jole Anderson and Linda Meyer, who live near University Plaza.
“It’s very cheap and convenient,” Meyer said. “It’s just 50 cents. And it goes around more of DeKalb than the Huskie Bus does.”
The bus runs between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays.
It takes the Green Line just under an hour to make its entire route before returning to its home at 1606 Bethany Road.
The Green Line has been running for about four years, said Debbie Salisbury, director of training and development for Voluntary Actions Center, which runs the Green Line.
“It’s been getting stronger ever since,” Salisbury said. “Our ridership has more than doubled.”
Despite the inexpensive fare and the wider coverage by the Green Line, some students still prefer the Huskie Bus.
“I’d rather take the Huskie Bus out of convenience,” said Erin Okayama, a freshman journalism major.
