Huskies extend winning streak

After dropping the first game to DePaul, the NIU volleyball team (7-3) was able to rebound and win the next three games (26-30, 30-22, 30-18, 30-26) Tuesday night in Chicago to win their fifth consecutive match.

The Huskies (1-2) had a season-high 15 service aces, the most they have had in 13 years when they had 19 against Miami (OH).

“We’re getting better every day, but we need to work on getting consistent for a longer period of time,” coach Ray Gooden said. “[Tuesday] we didn’t have our best hitting match, but our serving was a lot better.”

Jenny Rohren and Tera Lobdell led the way with four aces apiece for NIU.

Middle blocker Jen VonderHaar, the reigning MAC West Division Player of the Week, and outside hitter Lobdell paced the way for the Huskies with 14 kills apiece.

“Jen had another solid night and Tera was good at the net,” Gooden said. “We have been working with Tera’s defense and blocking. When she makes contributions in those two areas, it really helps us out.”

The Huskies won the first time on the road this year, while having a 6-1 record at Victor E. Court.

“This was a good match to get a lot of players in and give them some confidence,” Gooden said. “Everyone contributed in one way or another.”
