Police take stand in case
September 12, 2002
Members of the DeKalb and Sycamore police departments took the stand Thursday during the trial of former NIU student Todd Allgood.
Allgood, 34, of Sycamore, is charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting another former NIU student on April 25, 2001.
The victim, who was 21 at the time of the alleged assault, said Allgood kidnapped her by gunpoint and forced her to drive to his house, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Allgood pleaded not guilty to the charges and said the intercourse was consensual.
Patrick Powers, a latent print examiner from the Illinois State Police, also testified.
Powers had examined a shoe print that was discovered in the console of the victim’s car.
To take the print from the console, a gelatin lifter was used, Powers said.
A photo of the gelatin lifter also was taken to examine the shoe print.
“Although the print is protected by the gelatin lifter, it’s standard practice,” Powers said.
Powers said he initially tried to get an idea of what the shoe looked like.
After examining the sole of the shoe and the print, Powers said both the shoe and the print’s pattern, size and wear corresponded with each other, Powers said.
Powers couldn’t say it was the same shoe Allgood wore because there was an absence of identity characteristics, such as nicks and cuts.
Detective Mike Stewart, of the DeKalb police, and one of the officers involved in the case, also testified.
Prosecuting attorney Clint Hull took out several pieces of evidence to show the jury they were the items taken from the crime scene.
Hull went through several photographs taken by Stewart of the parking lot where Allgood allegedly first approached the victim.
Hull asked Stewart to explain where the lot was in reference to Route 38 and what angles the cars are parked in the lot.
Hull then talked about the car and where it was located while evidence was being gathered.
Stewart said he and the DeKalb police attempted to fingerprint the car, but were unable to get prints.
Lt. Darrel Johnson of the DeKalb police also testified.
He verified that several pieces of evidence, like a piece of paper with the victim’s name written on it, and a red handkerchief were found in Allgood’s wallet.
Hull played a videotape that showed footage of the inside and outside of the trailer where the attack allegedly took place. The video was recorded before evidence was collected .
The video, taped by DeKalb police officer John Petragallo, showed the dining area, kitchen and entry way to the bathroom where Allgood allegedly forced the victim to take a shower after intercourse. The video also showed a condom allegedly used by Allgood during intercourse. Strands of hair, said to belong to the victim, were shown near the heating vents.
Petragallo will take the stand at 10:30 a.m. today as the trial continues at the DeKalb County Courthouse.
