Seventh Street crossing to close
September 18, 2002
Repairs to the North Seventh Street railroad crossing will take place starting Friday, Sept. 20.
The construction will result in Seventh Street being closed to traffic between Lincoln Highway and Locust Street.
“Every 20 years or so this work needs to be done,” said Joel Maurer, DeKalb’s assistant director of Public Works.
The rubber surfacing at the crossing, used to make travel over the railroad tracks smoother for vehicles, has deteriorated. The rubber will be torn up and replaced with concrete.
Since the project is an improvement on the railroad tracks, Union Pacific is paying for and handling the construction, Maurer said.
“The only improvements we make would be to the streets and sidewalks leading up to the railroad crossing,” he said.
DeKalb city tax dollars are not being used for the repairs, Maurer added.
A representative from Union Pacific was unavailable for comment.
The entire resurfacing project is expected to last no more than 10 days.
Similar construction will take place at the North 10th Street railroad crossing immediately after construction is completed on Seventh Street.
