Asian Americans celebrate culture

By Andrew Duff

Get ready for a night of Asian culture.

The fourth-annual Asian-American Welcome Night is here.

The event gathered about 100 people last year, and aims to show all the opportunities available to Asian Americans.

The event will be at 7 p.m. today at the Holmes Student Center’s Regency Room.

Speakers will include Dr. Tes Tuason of NIU’s Counseling and Student Development Center, as well as NIU alumnus Vinnay Mullich.

Asian Americans make up seven percent of NIU’s student population, making them the second-largest minority group here, following African Americans.

The night is designed to help Asian Americans meet each other and make connections with programs that NIU offers.

“We’re represented fairly well, but there’s still room for improvement,” said Ryan Billedo, a senior computer science major. “The Presidential Task Force on Asian-Americans has helped a lot.”

Interim associate provost Robert Wheeler, who’s also chair of the task force, welcomes all students.

“Everyone is invited to attend the event, welcome Asian-American students, and learn more about academic and support services on campus,” he said. The night will feature Asian music, refreshments and door prizes. Prizes will include residence hall meal plan upgrades for spring, NIU sweatshirts and HSC gift certificates.
