CAB brings all that jazz
September 12, 2002
Campus Activities Board’s Fine Arts Committee wants to make plans with you tonight.
Jazz pianist Loston Harris will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.
“We’re really excited to have him,” said Mary Tosch, assistant director of University Programming and Activities. “It’s a jazz trio and it is going to consist of a piano, a trumpet and a bass … [Harris] is kind of more of an up-beat, more contemporary, younger type of jazz.”
Tosch continued, likening the pianist with a contemporary performer.
“Loston Harris is compared to Harry Connick Jr.,” she said, “but he compliments his jazz piano-playing with his illustrious voice. It’s very unique.”
The concert is the first in a semester-long series of fine arts programs planned by the committee.
Attending events is not the only way students can get involved. Tosch encourages students to join CAB and, specifically, the Fine Arts Committee to help out with activities.
“The Fine Arts Committee does everything from planning the events, to marketing, to actually working the day of the events,” Tosch said. “Those are the students that, when you come to fine arts events, they’re the ones greeting you, handing you playbills, taking your tickets, that type of thing.”
The Fine Arts Series for this year has already been planned, but students who would like to get involved can help organize for the 2003-2004 series. Tosch expects planning for that school year to start in October.
Students who want to join CAB should visit the Campus Life Building, Room 160. Anyone looking for information on CAB events can call 753-1580 or visit www.niu.edu/cab.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 753-3146. Cost is $5 for students and $13 for general public.
