NIU men’s soccer heads to Northwestern

By Sean Connor

Winning its last two games on the road, the NIU men’s soccer team looks to make it three today when it faces host Northwestern University at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats (3-4-0) have managed to tie the Huskies once in their last 15 meetings. Outside of last year, the Huskies hold a 15-3-2 lifetime record against Northwestern.

“Northwestern is improved this year, but they’ve been struggling to score goals as well,” coach Willy Roy said.

Roy’s spirits were lifted on Monday after the Huskies lost to the Bradley Braves on Sunday.

“I felt better about the game after watching the video,” Roy said. “They pushed us off the ball and had breakaways, but we gave them shots. We made four brutal defensive mistakes, unlike the Western game, where we communicated and helped each other out. We’ll learn from these things, though.”

Northwestern got off to a hot start after winning its first two games of the season. Leading the way for NU is 147-pound Tito Lara.

Lara leads the Wildcats on offense, having scored three of their five goals of the season on 11 shots, including the game-winning goal against Western Illinois University in their second game.

NIU (2-6-0) should look to senior Peter Agrimson, who has helped keep the Huskies winning streak alive against the Wildcats.

Agrimson scored the game-tying goal in last year’s matchup against NU that ended with the teams knotted up at two goals apiece. Agrimson also scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Northwestern in the 2000 campaign.

Roy thinks the Huskies will continue to improve as the season moves on.

“We’re capable of doing better and we will do better,” Roy said. “As long as we’re there mentally, things will get better.”
