Two crop dusters crash in county

In a matter of three days, two crop dusters crashed in DeKalb county.

The first crashed around 11:35 a.m. July 24 about a quarter mile southwest of the intersection of Perry and Haumesser roads, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office reports.

According to reports, witnesses at the scene said the plane apparently was having engine trouble before going down.

Frank Kincaid, 50, of McQueeney, Texas, the pilot of the Wetherly airplane, was unharmed. There also wasn’t any damage around the area where the plane crashed, except for a few corn stalks, said Chuck Hendrickson, owner of Hendrickson’s Flying Service in Rochelle, to whom the aircraft also belonged.

“We don’t know yet what happened,” Hendrickson said.

The plane had enough fuel and took off normally, he added.

According to police reports, Kincaid told police he was en route to the Waterman area when his plane engine began to cut out. He wanted to land on Haumesser Road, but there was an oncoming car, so he had to land in the cornfield.

“There was fire in the engine, but it didn’t spread or anything,” DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

The fire was put out with fire extinguishers, according to reports. The plane needs to be fully recovered and dismantled before a cause can be concluded.

The plane should be repaired by next year. Kincaid also should be flying by next year, Hendrickson said.

The other crop duster crashed at 9:53 a.m. Friday at Rich and Schaefer roads.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff’s police reports, pilot Nathanial Brown, 40, of Sacramento, Calif., was slightly injured and taken to Rochelle Hospital. The airplane also was owned by Hendrickson’s.

Both cases still are under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Aviation Administration.

“These things don’t happen too often,” Hendrickson said. “We’ll wait and see what the FAA says.”
