Otto’s gets Soul
March 28, 2002
All souls will be out Saturday night at Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway.
Otto’s isn’t having some spiritual seance, but alt-rockers Soul Asylum will perform at 10 p.m.
A veteran of the rock scene, Soul Asylum has been together since 1981. Originally, the band consisting of Dave Pirner (vocals and guitar), Dan Murphy (guitar and vocals) and Karl Mueller (bass), was called Loud Fast Rules and gradually gained success performing at Minneapolis’ 7th Street Entry club.
It took a few years, but Soul Asylum recorded its first album in 1984. The success continued and eventually led to its biggest commercial achievement, “Grave Dancers Union,” which would end up double platinum, featuring the sobering hit “Runaway Train.” That same album produced “Somebody to Shove,” another of Soul Asylum’s biggest songs.
Soul Asylum is scheduled to release its next album in 2003 and frontman Pirner has a solo album due out in July.
Opening for Soul Asylum will be Pinch. The Nashville, Tenn., natives feature two members that also are in the Dixie Chicks, but they are all rock.
Otto’s owner Duff Rice said he’s expecting a big turnout for the concert.
“We should end up getting about 400 or 500 people in for the show, which would almost pack the house,” Rice said.
That atmosphere should be great for Soul Asylum and Pinch.
“They like playing in clubs or big sheds,” Soul Asylum manager Jake Walesch said. “It’s more personal because they are closer to their fans.”
This will be the band’s first trip to Otto’s, but the guys knew Rice from when he worked in Chicago.
The choice to play Otto’s came when the band was looking to play another show after its Friday night performance at the Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., Chicago.
Because of the band’s relationship with Rice, Otto’s was a perfect spot to finish the tour, Walesch said.
The doors at Otto’s open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Pinch will take the stage at about 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for the public and $8 for students, and only will be available to people 21 and older.
