Chris Isaak
February 21, 2002
If Frank Sinatra ever had decided that rockabilly music was his thing, we never would have needed Chris Isaak.
“Always Got Tonight” is like a road trip from the sandy beaches of California to the high stakes tables of Las Vegas.
Yes, this is the same man who brought you the Showtime hit “The Chris Isaak Show,” but don’t think for a second that his time on the set has taken away from time in the studio.
“Tonight” is his first album in four years and during that break period, Isaak crafted some delectable tunes about heartache. So for all those heartbroken men and women who need to find solace and a shoulder to cry on, look no further than the man who seems to have had a broken heart his whole life.
Isaak gives listeners a tour of the doldrums of depression, but unlike previous albums, does not tie us to the wall and send whips of bitterness and sorrow down our backs. On tracks like “Always Got Tonight” and “American Boy,” there is a warm and gentle optimism in the midst of pessimism. Isaak is like the country boy who stopped crying and got back on his horse.
On “American Boy,” Isaak invites us to join the road trip: “I’ll take you, baby/ To places you ain’t ever seen/ Come on, baby, and hop on in.”
And on “Let Me Down Easy,” Isaak pleads to not have yet another broken heart: “Can you hear my heart it’s calling/ You don’t know how hard I’m falling for you.”
The man has a way with words and with each string that is plucked on the guitar, there goes another heart string of the listener. This album will fit nicely for anyone who got the blues over Valentine’s Day. Isaak takes a peek into his soul and listeners can rest assured that all broken hearts can be mended.
There are some filler songs on the CD, which would sound better in an elevator than in a stereo. “Courthouse” and “Somebody to Love” are songs that your ears can take a walk on. Think of these songs just as the intermission for the better tracks on the album.
So if Isaak swings by in a ’64 Chevy, grab your shiny suit and hair gel and hop in the car, because the city that never sleeps is the destination and your driver is the man who never stops dreaming of love.
