Men swim to eighth-place finish
December 4, 2001
Head coach Anne Marie Stricklin knew the Huskies would be swimming against some good competition this week.
With that in mind, the third-year coach was happy with this weekend’s meet.
“We’re really pleased with how everything went this weekend,” Stricklin said. “This a great meet with some extremely competitive teams and over 600 athletes. We’ve done well against these teams; I’m really proud of how they competed. It’s been a great weekend.”
The meet at Miami, Ohio, brought in teams from all over the country. The 17-team field included Michigan State, Cincinnati, William & Mary and MAC representatives Ball State, Buffalo and the host RedHawks.
For the Huskies, the men’s team managed an eighth-place finish while the women placed 13th.
For the men, juniors Pat Collins and Tony Marinaccio led the Huskies’ attack from the diving board.
Collins placed second in the one-meter event with 443.80 points while Marinaccio finished eighth with a score of 386.30. In the three-meter event, Marinaccio got the better of his teammate, picking up an eighth place while Collins finished ninth.
Erwan Jeffroy was one of the many Huskies to have good weekend swims.
Jeffroy placed 13th in the 200-yard individual medley and added an 11th-place finish with a personal best time of 4:02:46 in the 400-yard individual medley.
Senior captain Leon Weed had a productive weekend as she took home a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, with times of 57.74 and 2:07:30, respectively.
Perhaps the best overall performance on the men’s side came from Andras Schonek.
Schonek finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard event.
Schonek also finished ninth in the 500-yard freestyle, tenth in the 50-yard free and teamed with Chris Kamp, Tyson Trowbridge and Dario Fuentes to take sixth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
On the women’s side, Katie Leidel led the Huskie squad with two top-15 finishes.
The Texas native finished 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07:04 and finished in the same place in the 200-yard event with a time of 2:25:49.
Leidel also teamed with Katie Thatcher, Shanna Rankin and Heidi Burmeister for a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
The Huskies return to action Jan. 6 against Georgetown and McMasters.
