Huskies prepare for senior night against EMU
November 9, 2001
Senior Carrie Blankenship doesn’t believe that her last regular-season home match is already here.
“It’s so weird that it’s senior night,” said the Huskie outside hitter. “You go through being here for four years and every year there’s a senior night and it’s not you, and now it is me.”
When the Huskies entertain the Eagles from Eastern Michigan tonight at 7 p.m., Blankenship along with fellow teammates Jen Scarpino and Sara Lein will experience their final regular-season home match.
The Huskies will host a conference quarterfinal match on Tuesday, November 20th, and depending on how they finish the rest of the regular season they might be hosting the entire Mid-American Conference Tournament.
NIU currently boasts a 19-4 record overall and 13-2 in the MAC. Tuesday night, it set a new school record by racking up its 16th straight win.
Tonight should bring some more momentum to the team with it being a night for those players that display leadership and dedication.
“You definitely don’t want to lose on your senior night,” said defensive specialist Scarpino. “It’s something you’ll remember and that’ll stick out, so it’s a big match. All our families will be there and I’m looking forward to it.”
Before NIU started its recent tear, it suffered a pair of losses to Ball State and Eastern Michigan. The Huskies already have gotten revenge on Ball State, and now will be looking to avenge the Eagles.
Sara Lein, who despite being a senior, played her first match as a Huskie this season, claims that her and the rest of the seniors will play their hearts out tonight.
“We’ll try our hardest to win,” said Lein. “I know us three are going to play as hard as we possibly can.”
With tonight being senior night, the players as well as coach Todd Kress know that the main focus is still winning the game.
“It’s as big of a match as any we’ve played,” said Kress. “They’re all big down the stretch because we have our destiny in our hands. If we win out we’ll be hosting the whole tournament here, so it’s a big match. Eastern got us up at their place and they’re playing good volleyball right now and we might even see them somewhere down the road in the conference tournament.”
