Swimmers look for win in Wisconsin

By Mark Pickrel

After traveling through two times zones for the last meet, a trip to Wisconsin-Green Bay today will be a welcome sight for the NIU women’s swim team.

The women will be rejoined this week by the men after the teams went separate ways last week.

Last weekend, the women traveled to Washington and the men headed south to the University of Illinois.

In tonight’s meet, the women will look to improve upon their solid performance last week at Washington State.

Washington native Andree Dallain led the way for the Huskies, winning the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:34.02 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.31.

Dallain got help from another Huskie with ties to the Great Northwest as Washington State transfer Katie Leidel captured a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke and took second in the 200-yard freestyle.

On the men’s side, the team will look to follow the lead of Andras Schonek. The senior captured the Huskies’ only two first place finishes in the Illini Fall Classic, winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.

Schonek’s time in the 200-freestyle was four and a half seconds better than the next competitor.

“Andras has done a great job for us,” coach Anne Marie Stricklin said. “We look for him to continue his success through the MAC championships.”

This weekend’s meet will be especially important for the future of the team.

The Huskies lost two Illinois recruits to the Wisconsin-Green Bay this season.

Two-time Illinois state meet qualifier Robin Becker (Naperville Central) committed to UWGB, and Palos Heights native Adam Cremieux decided to transfer to the same school after establishing himself as one of the Missouri Valley’s top sprinters at Northern Iowa.
