Huskies come up short
October 17, 2001
Decent, but not good enough.
That was how NIU men’s soccer assistant coach Karsten Roy described the play of the Huskies after they fell to 19th-ranked Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wednesday 3-0.
With their seventh consecutive win, the host Broncos retained possession of the John Lewang Memorial Cup, a traveling trophy between the teams honoring the former NIU coach.
The Huskies dropped to 3-10-0 while the Broncos improved to 12-2-0.
“We’re playing well enough to be in the game, but not well enough to win,” Roy said.
Kevin Roethe gave the Broncos all the scoring they needed when he deposited a rebound in the 21st minute for a 1-0 lead.
Despite facing 10 corner kicks in the first half, the Huskies kept the score 1-0 until intermission.
But the second half belonged to the Broncos, as Mark Krstich and Chad Dombeowski added goals to set the final margin. The Huskies managed only one shot on goal in the second half, four for the match.
NIU goalkeeper Rashi Pala stopped four five shots while Chris Dadaian recorded four saves for the Broncos.
The Huskies were shut out for the fourth time in eight matches and for the fifth time overall.
“We have to create more scoring chances,” Roy said. “We were competitive, hanging in there for 70 minutes, but then they got the second goal and we couldn’t get back into it. We have to keep plugging away and do the little bit more to be able to win.”
Wednesday’s match was the last for the Huskies until Oct. 26, when they host Wisconsin’s main branch to open a three-game homestand.
