Women’s golf places high at Notre Dame Invitational
October 1, 2001
For most people, Sunday is a day for rest and relaxation — but, while most people watch football, eat and sleep, the NIU women’s golf team is hard at work.
Sunday’s final score of 323 at the Notre Dame Invitational was the third time in three tournaments that the Huskies have been at their best on the week’s final day.
“Unfortunately yesterday was a very long day,” head coach Pam Tyska said of the Huskies’ struggles in the first two rounds. “We played 36 holes and it is hard to grind it out when you are both mentally and physically drained.”
Saturday saw the Huskies shoot their worst two rounds of the season. NIU posted scores of 341 and 339 at South Bend’s Warren Golf Course. Fortunately for the Huskies, they were able to finish the tournament strong, taking home a 5th place finish.
“Today it was a lot easier to correct mistakes with not having to combat exhaustion,” Tyska commented.
Allison Beam paced the Huskies with a final round score of 79. Her score of 243 included an impressive string of three straight birdies in the final round. Beam’s round three total earned her 5th place, just 11 strokes off the lead. The senior captain’s 5th place finish was identical to her finish last year at Notre Dame where she shot a 237.
Michelle Hupfer also had a strong Sunday shooting an 83 and finished with a 254, taking home 31st place.
Tara Hawkins’ final round of 81 was six shots better than her best round on Saturday. She finished just two shots behind Hupfer with a 259.
Amanda Mapley, Janelle Warrick, and Irish Whalen rounded out the Huskie’s squad for last weekend. Mapley shot a pair of 86’s on Saturday before struggling with a final round 89. Warrick saw a vast improvement on Sunday shooting an 80, the team’s second best round of the weekend. Irish Whalen found her stroke early shooting an opening round 86 before finishing with a score of 272.
NIU will swing back into action this weekend as it hosts the 17th annual Huskie Classic. The six team event will be held at Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Illinois.
