Men’s soccer suffers defeat

The NIU men’s soccer team lost to Marshall Sunday 3-1 at Huskie Soccer Field. The Huskies are now 0-2 in Mid-American Conference.

Marshall scored the first three goals of the game. Robert Ngumire scored on a direct free kick from 20 yards out. Brent Sobczak then scored on a Abdul Wahab Lubega’s crossing pass from 10 yards out to give the Thundering Herd the 2-0 lead. Lubega then scored 11 minutes later to take the 3-0 lead.

NIU scored its lone goal when Robert Berkley intercepted a Herd pass for an unassisted score.

Berkley’s goal also snapped an extended scoreless streak for NIU, who had suffered consecutive shutouts in their previous two matches. The goal ended a 304 minute, 14 second scoring drought, dating back to a 2-1 victory over DePaul on Sept. 18.

“This was a carbon copy of what’s happened to us all season,” said NIU assistant coach Derek Niepomnik said. “We came out very flat in the first half and gave the ball away too many times. They pressured us at every opportunity and took advantage of a couple of mistakes. Offensively, we didn’t test their goalkeeper all day. We played better in the last 15 minutes but we were already down 3-0 and it was just too late.”

NIU’s next game is on Friday when the Huskies head to Akron for a 3 p.m. match. The Huskies face Bowling Green on Sunday.
