Volleyball aims to keep rolling

After Tuesday’s exciting five-game win against ISU, volleyball coach Todd Kress knows that his team is on a roll.

“We’ve got as much momentum as we need,” Kress said. “We played well this past weekend, [and] we’ve now got a little streak going here at home.”

This weekend finds NIU at home for the second consecutive weekend, to play Kent State on Friday and Akron on Saturday.

Both of these matches are against teams with winning conference records. The Huskies defeated Akron once last season in five games, and defeated Kent State twice.

Rena Widboom, Jen Vonderhaar, Tenisha Wilkins and Tera Lobdell all have contributed and will need to continue to keep NIU’s 10-game winning streak moving. Along with that foursome, defensive specialist Jen Scarpino will need play as well as she did Tuesday, when she recorded 15 digs.

Senior outside hitter Carrie Blankenship will see more action than last weekend but still is trying to regain her game. She has played limited time since her ankle injury on Oct. 12.

Wilkins claimed Tuesday that she wasn’t going to let the Huskies lose on their home court, and she and the team will try their best to hold up that statement and extend their winning streak. Kress realizes, though, that the Huskies have to be careful & especially considering their troubles closing out matches when an opponent’s down.

“I’ve been telling my team all along that you can’t underestimate anybody,” Kress said.
