Blankenship injured

What a difference a week can make.

Last Monday, senior Carrie Blankenship was named Mid-American Conference player of the week. This week, however, the outside hitter probably won’t even be in the lineup because of an ankle injury.

The Huskie volleyball captain most likely will miss this weekend’s games due to an ankle sprain suffered in Friday’s win over Ohio. She played the rest of the match with the injury, but sat out during Saturday’s game against Marshall.

The Huskies will fill the senior captain’s spot with freshman Daren Poe and sophomore Amanda Newlin, each of whom played well replacing the 5-foot-9 inch senior Saturday.

Poe led the team with 13 digs against Marshall with four kills, while Newlin had her best game of the season, posting a match-best .625 hitting percentage.

Blankenship is spending some time rehabilitating, and the team will see how her progress is at the end of the week. Coach Todd Kress doesn’t want to rush her, and most likely will let her rest this weekend.

“I would say Carrie is probably a no-go for this weekend,” said Kress. “We have Daren and Amanda to step in for her, and they performed well this past weekend.”
