Men’s rugby shows ‘pure domination’

Pure domination is what NIU men’s rugby president John Colangelo used to describe the team’s 35-5 win over Northwestern on Saturday.

NIU defeated Northwestern with scores from Doug Kluth, Pete Pietruszewski, Dave McClain and Jim Seloover. Colangelo feels that NIU is one of the most talented teams due to it’s balance.

The Huskies stand at 4-1 in the Chicago Area Rugby Football Union Conference, and haven’t played an all-around game yet this season, said Colangelo.

“We’ve dominated teams due to our athletes’ talent,” said Colangelo. “However, we haven’t reached our full potential yet and gelled as a team. When we do that, we’ll play even better than we are now.”

Last season the team finished third in the CARFU conference while posting a 2-5 record in conference play. However, this season NIU is currently first in the conference and looking to bring a championship home.

The current first place standing has no reflection on who will be crowned conference champion, as the regular season deals only with seeding for the conference tournament. Whoever wins the tournament, regardless of record or seed, will be the conference champion.

Colangelo knows this, and thus is looking for his team to continue doing the things they have done to continue their winning ways.

“Our team intensity has been good,” said Colangelo. “We are taking things more seriously. We set a goal when I became president to be conference champions. We’ve had opportunities to win the conference but now we realize our talent and want to do it.”
