Rugby looking for undefeated record
October 3, 2001
NIU women’s rugby President Fran Campobasso knows that this weekend’s game against Northwestern will definitely be the team’s biggest test this season.
The undefeated women’s rugby team (3-0) will play Northwestern Saturday, who in Campobasso’s opinion, is the deepest team besides themselves in the Chicago Area Rugby Football Union conference.
“This is our biggest game of the season,” said Campobasso. “If we win this game, we’ll be seeded first in our conference and get a first round bye, so this game is important.”
Not only have the women been playing well this season, as seen from their undefeated record thus far, but they also played outstanding last season as they were CARFU conference champions.
In order to win this game, Campobasso believes the team needs to keep playing solid rugby. She believes that they are pretty deep, but her one concern lies in the fact that the younger players have a lack of experience playing in big games.
The game will be played Saturday at 11 a.m. behind the Stevenson parking lot. Campobasso encourages NIU students to come out and cheer on the team.
“With fans and people cheering for us it will only get us fired up,” said Campobasso. “In front of a lot of people I think our girls will play even better. So the fans coming out would be huge.”
