Huskies split over weekend
September 10, 2001
NIU men’s soccer coach Willy Roy wanted junior Peter Agrimson to take more shots.
The defensive standout did exactly that this past weekend.
On Friday, Agrimson scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over University of Detroit, and added an assist in a 2-1 defeat of Bradley University Sunday.
Following a foul outside the goal box, Agrimson took the free kick and drove it through the Titan wall. UDM goalie Michael McAfee managed to get his hands on it, but the ball bounced off him and into the net.
“I told Peter to shoot more, because I thought he might surprise someone,” Roy said. “He did that today. He has a hard shot and the ball went through traffic, so the goalkeeper wasn’t able to pick it up until it was too late.”
UDM (2-1-0) outshot the Huskies 19-14, but junior goalie Rasih Pala made seven saves for his first shutout of the season.
“The important thing is we got a win,” Roy said. “We should have scored a goal early in the match and things might have been a lot different. Detroit is a good team, so I’m extremely happy for my players to get a win like this.”
Sunday’s game proved to be the exact opposite for NIU (1-3-0). The Huskies outshot BU (3-1-0) 19-15, but the Braves capitalized on the Huskies’ passing miscues to get the 2-1 victory.
Bradley’s Luke Kreamalmeyer opened the scoring with a 12-yard shot past Pala, after BU’s Gavin Clinton stole a pass from the Huskie defense, forcing a four-on-three attack.
In the 52nd minute, freshman Bruce Conrad scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game. After Agrimson pounded a shot off a Brave defender, Conrad knocked in the 10-yard rebound.
“Bruce did a nice job finishing his scoring chance,” Roy said. “He’s been a real solid player for us.”
Bradley scored the game-winning goal when the Huskie defense failed to clear the ball, and BU’s Ryan Halcrow put an unassisted goal past Pala.
“Two mistakes cost us this game,” Roy admitted. “We did a bad job of clearing the ball out of the back, especially on the second goal.”
Bradley came into the game ranked 26th in the nation by Soccer America and got its first victory in seven trips to DeKalb.
