Soccer ties with alumnae
August 26, 2001
The NIU women’s soccer team fell behind early Saturday at the annual Alumni SoccerFest, but came back to earn a 3-3 draw.
Sophomore Katie Klaas scored two goals and senior Jane Mucci added a pair of assists. This was Mucci’s first action since 1999 after sitting out last season with a back injury.
Mucci’s older sister, Anne Iwinski, scored the first goal in the 18th minute. Iwinski hooked up with ex-teammates Anna Marinaccio and Kerri Franklin before putting the nine-yard shot past sophomore Akiko Iwabuchi.
Dee Dee Rubens extended the lead to 2-0 after an NIU miscue.
Alumna Stefanie Maurer kept the Huskie offense quiet in the first half with five saves.
The Huskies tallied their first goal in the 58th minute, as Mucci led Klaas for the score.
Senior Maria Flores tied the game three minutes later as she put her shot past Amber Howard.
In the 66th minute, Klaas and Mucci hooked up again to take a temporary lead. Mucci’s pass set Klaas free on a breakaway and Klaas scored from 12 yards out.
Alumna Kerri Franklin tapped in the tying goal after receiving a pass from Iwinski with just 6:21 left in the game.
“We fell behind, but we stayed focused and managed to come back, so that was good to see,” coach Frank Horvat said. “We made some mistakes in the back and didn’t finish our quality scoring chances, but we had a lot of positives today.”
The Alumni were outshot 28-11, but the Huskies could only manage 11 shots on net, while the Alumni countered with 10.
