Women’s tennis sweeps weekend
April 17, 2001
Just as NIU women’s tennis coach Laura Scott expected, the Huskies defeated both their opponents over the weekend.
On Friday, the Huskies beat Buffalo 7-0, sweeping all nine doubles and giving up only seven matches out of 106 games played.
“We expected that we should be able to dominate a match like this, and we did just that,” Scott said.
Scott credited the win to the different styles practiced over the week.
“We did a little more serve-and-volley action, and it was good to see,” Scott said.
On Saturday, the Huskies showed they could continue their winning streak in their last home match of the season, beating the University of Akron 5-0.
Akron had only four players and had to default two singles and one doubles match.
Tanja Sukovic and Kris Tiedt both had their 13 wins against their Akron opponents.
Ashley Brunk’s last home match at NIU ended with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
“It was good to get Ashley on the court, plus three of our newcomers,” Scott said.
Scott was happy with the team’s performance and the outcome of the matches.
“We got in front of the home crowd with great weather, and we got two good sweeps,” said Scott.
