NIU hopes to heat up against UIC
April 16, 2001
Steve Rodecap hopes his NIU men’s tennis team can bounce back today from its disappointing loss to Bowling Green.
The Huskies (11-10) are coming off a weekend that saw a split, 1-1, in their two games. NIU defeated Toledo 5-2 on Friday but lost to Bowling Green on Saturday 7-0. They hope to rebound on the road against UIC today at 3 p.m.
Rodecap said the team’s performance against the Falcons on Saturday was disappointing.
“Coming off that loss on Saturday, we want to get on our feet as soon as we can,” said the second-year Huskie coach. “We had a great opportunity slip away from us on Saturday, and it would only help us to play as soon as we can.”
The Flames (6-14) are coming off a 7-0 win against Cleveland State in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference opener Saturday.
Rodecap said the Flames are really tough in the first two slots and will pose a big test for his top players, Raymond Van Wasbeek and Juan Pablo Barriga. Van Wasbeek, who competes at the No. 1 singles slot, owns a 17-13 singles record, while Barriga has a 10-9 record in his first semester of play.
UIC’s Jon Schmidt is coming off a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cleveland State’s Adam Mercurio at the No. 1 slot, while No. 2 Nick Bodmer is coming off a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Schmidt owns a 7-18 record, and Bodmer has a 14-11 record and a five-game winning streak.
“All of them have been pretty solid, but they have been playing up and down,” Rodecap said. “We haven’t reached our full potential, but we are getting close.”
After the Huskies match against the Flames, they go up against Buffalo on Saturday. The match will be NIU’s last before the Mid-American Conference Tournament on April 26.
