Two more Huskies go pro

Two more NIU football players were snatched up the day after the NFL Draft on Monday.
McAllister Collins and Jermaine Hampton signed undrafted rookie contracts with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts, respectively.
Hampton joins former Huskie teammate Ryan Diem, who was drafted by the Colts on Sunday in the fourth round (No. 118). Justin McCareins also was picked in the fourth round in Sunday’s draft (No. 124) by the Tennessee Titans.
“Jermaine is a fearless player,” said NIU coach Joe Novak. “Several teams looked at him last season. Teams loved the way he hit. Some teams think he can play as a special teamer. He is going to get a chance at special teams or as a nickel back, where he won’t play that deep, but line up like a linebacker.”
Hampton thinks being in the same camp with Diem will help both players to improve.
“This is a dream come true for me, with Diem and I going down there to play,” Hampton said. “This is a wonderful opportunity. I am just going to go into camp and show them what I am made of.”
Collins, who was NIU’s starting center, goes to a team that desperately needs offensive line help. The Jaguars drafted Maurice Williams from Michigan University in the second round and Chad Ward in the sixth, but lost starting left tackle Leon Searcy, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
Collins said his chances of making the team are very good. Jacksonville does not have a true back-up center and are currently using guards at the position. With the signing of the former Huskie center, the Jaguars look to him to fill that position.
“McAllister was really close to being drafted at the end Sunday,” Novak said. “Some people were taking a good look at him. Sometimes it is good not to get drafted, and he got the chance of what team he wanted to go to. Jacksonville was a team that needed help at the center position.”
Collins said Pittsburgh was set on drafting him in the fifth round, but the Steelers took Chukky Okobi from Purdue.
“They had a lot of interest in me,” Collins said. “That kind of hurt when they didn’t draft me. It worked out better this way.”
NIU players Buster Sampson and Cameron Saulsby are still available and look to be picked up in a couple days. The Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts hold the rights on Sampson, but the former starting free safety is holding out for the NFL.
