Huskies fall over weekend
April 15, 2001
The weekend was not a kind one to the NIU baseball team.
After coming with a six-game winning streak, the longest since NIU brought the program back in 1991, the Huskies went 1-3 against Western Michigan in a four-game series.
The Huskies (17-17 overall, 1-10 Mid-American Conference) lost Friday 14-13 to the Broncos, split the double-header Saturday, winning 8-3 and losing 15-0, and lost Sunday 13-7.
They got off the wrong foot in Sunday’s game as WMU catcher Jason Richards hit a grand-slam off senior Dan Badgley to give the Broncos a 6-1 lead after the first inning.
Western Michigan managed to score three more runs in the third off Badgley (2-4) before NIU had its second hit of the game.
The Huskies managed to score a run in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to pull within two, 9-7, but that was all the runs NIU would get. WMU scored four more insurance runs in the eighth inning to take the 13-7 win.
On Saturday, the Huskies took Game 1 8-3 to win their first MAC game of the season. Dan Urban hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to give the Huskies the 8-3 victory. Don Rodman pitched seven strong innings, striking out three Bronco batters and only walking two.
“It’s good to get our first conference win,” coach Dave Schrage said. “Dan Urban had a real big day for us. He really carried us with his two doubles and the home run. Don Rodman had a great outing and was really hitting his spots.”
Game 2 held different results for the Huskies as the Broncos crushed NIU 15-0 as Bronco starter Pat Misch held the Huskies to three runs. The sophomore lefty struck out 10 Huskie batters and had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning.
“[Misch] had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and really dominated us all day,” Schrage said. “It really didn’t matter who pitched for us”
