Owen makes cut for top student athletes
March 30, 2001
Junior wrestler Scott Owen added another award to his list of accomplishments after being named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District V Fall/Winter At-Large team.
The team recognizes student athletes who compete in wrestling, cross country, fencing, women’s field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, riflery, skiing, soccer, swimming, men’s water polo, men’s volleyball and track and field.
District V consists of all of the universities in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota, with the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba included.
Owen will find out April 17 if he is among 10 honorees from all eight districts to be named to the First-Team Academic All-American.
The award follows a season in which Owen guided the NIU wrestling team to its first winning record in 12 years. He led the team in wins with 36, including a Mid-American Conference Championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight at the NCAA tournament.
The junior holds a 3.64 grade-point average as a biological sciences major and gained a spot on the MAC Honor Roll this season.
“This is quite an honor, but it recognized Scott’s hard work,” NIU wrestling coach Dave Grant said. “He takes everything very seriously & in academics and wrestling. He is an all-around great student and great wrestler.”
