February 21, 2001
The NIU men’s tennis squad took its two-game winning streak into the weekend and came out with some mixed results.
On Friday, NIU extended its winning streak to three matches as the Huskies swept Valparaiso University 7-0. The sweep was the first of the year for NIU and marked the first three-match win streak since the 1997-98 season.
The Huskies grabbed the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The combinations of Brent Sitarski and Juan Pablo Barriga and Jon
Perlman and Tim Freesen came up victorious for the Huskies.
The singles round proved to be a straight sweep for the Huskies as they took all six singles matches. Only Perlman and Raymond Van Wasbeek needed three sets to defeat their opponents as Barriga, Sitarski, Freesen and Aaron Forsberg came through with two-set wins.
On Saturday, NIU’s winning streak came to an abrupt halt as the Huskies were defeated by Illinois State 6-1.
ISU swept the doubles point by taking all three flights from the Huskies. They continued their dominance by winning five out of the six singles points. Only Aaron Forsberg was able to grab a victory for the Huskies, as he defeated ISU’s Albert Piasecki in three sets.
“They just competed a lot better than we did today,” said NIU coach Steve Rodecap. “We still aren’t to the point where we focus well enough for three hours, but we are getting much closer.”
The Huskies look to start a new winning streak when they take on Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and the University of Wisconsin -Green Bay in two weeks.
