Coach hopes past won’t jinx Huskies
February 7, 2001
Andy Greer hopes the NIU men’s basketball team won’t repeat its most recent performances tonight against Marshall.
The Huskies were demolished by Akron 103-75 on Monday night following NIU’s 81-74 loss to Central Michigan on Saturday.
NIU (4-15 overall, 3-6 Mid-American Conference) at one point held a 16—point lead over Central Michigan, but the Chippewas kept the team to 7 points in the final nine minutes to take the game into overtime and seal the victory.
Since Saturday, the Huskies have showed no emotion, and with the Thundering Herd (13-6, 7-4) coming to town for a 7 p.m. tipoff, Greer hopes the Huskies can finally turn things around.
“We are going to have to sit down with the kids and see what we can do to reach them,” the interim coach said. “Hopefully, their pride and the fact that they are facing what I think to be the most talented team in the conference … on Wednesday, I hope the kids will get up for that.”
Against Akron’s Zips, senior guard Stephen Jones was held to under double digits for the first time since his return Jan. 17.
Jones and the Huskies will go up against probably the best duo in the MAC, Marshall’s Tamar Slay and J.R. VanHoose.
Slay is third in MAC scoring with 17.5 points a game, while VanHoose leads the MAC in rebounding with 10.8 boards a game. The center also has 16.3 points a game.
