Potter says farewell as wrestling falls to UM

Senior David Potter said goodbye to Chick Evans Field House on Sunday as the NIU wrestling team lost to Missouri in their last dual meet.

In his last home match of his collegiate career, Potter posted a 4-3 decision over UM’s Ry Stone. This would prove to be only 1 of 3 victories the Huskies could muster in the 24-9 loss. After Potter’s match knotted up the score at 3-3, NIU lost the next 6 dual matches.

Sophomore Jon Lovrich and junior Alexis Rivera each were defeated in their matches by one point at the heavyweight and 133-pound weight classes, respectively. The toughest loss came at the 141-pound weight class as senior Ryan Egan got pinned by J.P. Reese. This put the Huskies down 21-3 with just three matches left.

“We needed to get some big wins from our upperclassmen today,” said NIU wrestling coach Dave Grant. “Our guys didn’t come to wrestle. You have to be ready to compete on a day like this and we just weren’t ready.”

The Huskies did manage to bounce back and win their last two matches. Junior Scott Owen continued to dominate the 157-pound weight class with a 10-4 decision over UM’s Jesse Jordan. He improved his overall season record to 28-4.

“Scott wrestled well for us again and continues to put up points for us,” Grant said.

Freshman Bryce Hassemen closed out the meet with a 9-3 victory over Matt Vollmar of UM. The freshman has come on strong for the Huskies in the last two weekends with four victories, Grant said.

“Bryce looked really good today,” Grant said. “He really came out and wrestled hard.”
