Swimmers finish seventh
February 26, 2001
Placing seventh in this weekend’s Mid-American Conference championships, the NIU women’s swimming and diving team only managed to edge out two other MAC schools.
But while the Huskies didn’t fair well as a team, some individual highlights came from the Buffalo, N.Y., event, particularly concerning Ann Schmitt. Day 1 saw her break her own record in the 500-yard freestyle, good for third place. On Day 2, her time in the 200-yard free was a season best and netted her second place.
Schmitt also broke the school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:11.49. Her accomplishments during the three-day competition earned her a place on the First-Team All-MAC Women’s Swimming Team. She is the only Huskie in the 15-member group.
Erin Reichert placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and Kelly Amundson was seventh in the 200-yard free. Abby Presley placed eighth in the 100-yard
backstroke. Katie Leidel (10th) and Cindy Klanonik (15th) both placed in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Andree Dallain captured 12th place in the 400-yard individual medley. She also placed 15th in the 200-yard butterfly, and was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that won fourth place.
In the 200-yard free relay, the NIU team of Kelly Amundson, Shanna Rankin, Erin Riechert and Lind Rose took ninth place with a time of 1:40.67. The
meet-ending 400-yard free relay resulted in the Huskies taking ninth place.
The men’s team leaves Tuesday morning for Miami of Ohio for the men’s MAC championships, scheduled Thursday through Saturday.
