Men’s tennis recovers with win against WVU

The NIU men’s tennis squad finally found a light at the end of the tunnel. After suffering their fourth straight loss to a Big Ten opponent against Ohio State on Saturday, the Huskies picked up a victory against West Virginia Sunday.

The Ohio State match was a disaster for NIU, as the Huskies were swept by the Buckeyes 7-0. OSU currently is ranked 32 in the nation, and they proved their position by dominating the Huskies throughout the match.

Sunday, the Huskies turned their misfortune into a win, defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers 4-3. NIU got strong performances from the upper half of its lineup as Raymond Van Wasbeek, Brent Sitarski, and Aaron Forsberg all won their singles matches.

NIU also capitalized by winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point, and edge the Mountaineers by 1. The combinations of Sitarski and Juan Pablo Barriga, and Jon Perlman and Ryan Schnack dominated WVU.

Coach Steve Rodecap was very pleased with the team’s performance.

“We knew West Virginia was very good at No.1 and No. 2 singles,” Rodecap said. “Raymond played a good match and Sitarski came up big today. Aaron Forsberg really got it together too. He looked composed out there, and that was good to see.”

Rodecap and his Huskies will try to carry the momentum from the win against WVU with a dual meet against the University of Northern Iowa. The meet will be a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Boylan High School in Rockford.
