NIU prevails over Bowling Green, Akron

The men and women’s swimming and diving teams were victorious Saturday in their dual meet against Bowling Green State and Akron.
Seniors Mick Coyne, Ann Schmitt and Kelly Amundson stepped up for their last home competition of the season. The men beat Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green State 145-96, while the women upended both Bowling Green (147-43) and Akron (137-103).
Huskie Dan Cornelius captured the first-place title for the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.31. He also won the 200-free with a time of 1:44.45.
NIU’s Pat Collins, Marc Zabriskle and Tony Marinaccio took first, second and third place, respectively, in the diving competition. Coyne won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.89 and once again helped bring a win to the 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Schmitt won first place in the 200-free with a time of 1:56.47, as well as the 100-free with a time of 0:54.50. In the mile relay, Amundson took first place and Katie Carlson took second. In the 500-free, it was the other way around, with Carlson finishing first and Amundson second.
In the wake of the win, the Huskies are preparing for the MAC championships. The women’s competition is Feb. 22-24 in Buffalo, N.Y., while the men do battle March 1-3 in Oxford, Ohio.
