Finally home, wrestlers hope to kick Ohio out

After almost two months of away meets and tournaments, it’s home, sweet home for the NIU wrestling team.
The Huskies return to Chick Evans Field House to host Mid-American Conference rival Ohio University at 7 p.m. tonight. NIU is 5-5-1 overall, but 0-2-1 in the MAC after a tough loss to Kent State last Friday.
Coach Dave Grant hopes returning home will provide the spark the team needs to get its first MAC win. Meanwhile, Ohio comes into the match hungry for its first MAC victory after losing to Central Michigan last Saturday.
“I expect a lot of people to be at this match — there are going to be a lot of good matchups,” Grant said.
Senior Ryan Egan and junior Scott Owen will put their No. 1 MAC rankings on the line, facing the No. 2-ranked wrestlers in the conference.
“If Scott and Ryan can beat their top wrestlers, we will have a great chance of defeating Ohio,” Grant said.
Freshmen Greg Reardon and Bryce Hasseman will have an opportunity for an upset at the 197- and 165-pound weight classes. Ohio’s Dan Bednar and John Wervey each are ranked No. 1 in those weight classes.
On Sunday, the team will continue its busy weekend as it travels to Northwestern.
“We have a great opportunity to come out of this weekend with two big wins against top competitors,” Grant said.
