Iowa State associate head coach Terry Carroll thinks he could be a good addition to the NIU men’s basketball program.
Carroll called associate athletics director Rob Collins about the opening for the coaching job and thought his background in the Chicagoland area could make him a strong candidate to fill the opening. After the conversation, Carroll displayed a bigger interest in the job.
Before arriving at Iowa State, Carroll was an assistant at Drake from 1984-88 and head coach for Indian Hills Community College from 1989-1998. In 1997 and 1998, Carroll was Junior College Coach of the Year.
“I like the fact that NIU is in the MAC,” Carroll said. “It is a highly competitive conference. The conference has an outstanding base of Division 1 players. The university and its academics speaks for itself. The whole situation with the arena leads to an outstanding opening.”
“At Drake and Indian Hills, I recruited Chicago exclusively. I started my base in Chicago. Here at ISU, we have a strong interest in Chicago. With the contacts I have in Chicago, that will allow me to be a strong candidate.”
Collins said that Carroll is not a front runner in the opening and told him to send a letter of inquiry to athletic director Cary Groth. Collins said he has been in contact with more than 100 coaches about how interested they are in the job.
Other candidates along with Carroll include: interim coach Andy Greer, Illinois assistant Rob Judson, Michigan State assistant Brian Gregory, former Missouri and present Clippers assistant John Hammond, Utah assistant Jeff Strohm, UIC assistant Mark Coomes, Duke assistant Cris Collins, DePaul assistant Tracy Dildy and Rock Valley Community College head coach Carl Armato.
