Gymnastics looks to turn things around
January 24, 2001
Despite a competitive nature, the NIU women’s gymnastics team is off to a rough start with a 0-2 season record.
After losing to Bowling Green by less than 4 points Jan. 14, the Huskies took a blow from the University of Illinois-Chicago on Sunday by a score of 191.475 to 183.725.
Sophomore Anna Gardina picked up the top Huskie all-around spot, finishing third at 37.225. Only one Huskie finished in the top three in single events, with Reyna Gilbert taking third on the balance beam at 9.450. Gilbert ended behind Gardina in the all-around at 37.050.
Senior Asli Ozmeral was the Huskies’ final mark on the all-around, finishing behind Gilbert at 37.000. Ozmeral also finished in fourth place on the vault at 9.550. The vault was the highest scoring event of the day for the Huskies, who tallied 47.50.
UIC came out on top in every event, including the top two all-around spots with Chery Rubinger and Sara Casica taking the gold and silver, respectively.
The Huskies will need to find more consistency throughout their lineup to become a force in Mid-American Conference gymnastics. With a 0-1 conference record, they seek to turn it up Sunday against Eastern Michigan.
Eastern is already 1-1 in MAC competition with a win over 2000 MAC runner-up Ball State. The meet is set to start at 2 p.m. at Chick Evans Field House.
