One dead in July 12 shooting

A 27-year-old DeKalb man is being charged with first degree murder following a shooting on Sunday night in the 1000 block of W. Hillcrest Drive.

The DeKalb Police Department charged Wayne Q. Slater at 11:12 p.m. Sunday. An investigation is ongoing, according to a July 13 City of DeKalb news release. Slater is also being charged with residential burglary and theft, according to court documents. 

The shooting was reported to have occurred at 7:47 p.m.  Sunday where 32-year-old Johnny L. Black-Haygood was fatally shot, according to court documents. Black-Haygood was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m. on July 12. 

A bond hearing is set at 1 p.m. Friday, according to court documents. 

DeKalb and NIU police issued an active threat alert advising residents to shelter in place Sunday night. 

The DeKalb Police Department, NIU Police Department, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and Sycamore Police Department responded to the incident. The DeKalb County Major Case Squad is continuing to work on the investigation.
